2024 Regulatory Recap for OSHA

This was one of the busiest years we’ve seen for a while when it comes to changes to health & safety regulations. Here is a quick recap of the notable changes that occurred in 2024:

January 1, 2024
·       The NFPA 70e standard for arc flash was revised, as scheduled.

January 18, 2024
·       The MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices), which contains guidelines for setting up temporary traffic control on roadways, was updated for the first time since 2009.
·       The MUTCD is now required to be reviewed and updated every 4-years.
·       This round of changes focused on more effective hazard warnings, improved protection of pedestrians, and catching up with technology.

May 20, 2024
·       OSHA announced they will require Hazard Communication Programs to comply with the 7th edition of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS).
·       The most notable change was probably the allowance of abbreviated chemical labels for small containers.
·       Compliance is scheduled over a 2-year phase-in period, which doesn’t begin until 1/19/26.

August 30, 2024
·       OSHA proposed a new standard on Heat Stress Prevention.
·       The initial proposed standard applies to indoor and outdoor work, and it is triggered at a heat index of 80 degrees F.
